Harcourt Brace & Company, 1927. Hardcover. 8vo. First edition, first printing. 432 pp. Blue cloth binding. First state boards ('G' in Gantry resembles a 'C'). All first issue points present. Condition is fair. Rubbing to extremities, forecorners bumped; upper 3mm of cloth is somewhat sunfaded. Used book store price, short note indicating edition marked on flyleaf in pencil. Faint toning pattern on pastedown pages along hinges. No other markings. Light wear to textblock fore-edge, smudging to upper textblock edge. Dust jacket is somewhat unprepossessing, with open tears along head of spine, front forecorners; several small chips along periphery; variegated rubbing, surface abrasion to front panel and along joints; red vertical stripe has a somewhat brown cast. There is also a diffuse pattern of extremely fine blotting marks on the lower front panel (by the author's name). Sinclair Lewis's inimical genius for casting overpowering literary personalities is evident once more in Elmer Gantry. The titular figure is a desultory preacher chanced with bad habits and good luck.
