Harpers, 1961. Hardcover. 8vo. Inaugural edition. 266 pp. 1/4 black vinyl, 3/4 blue linen binding. Illustrated with several pages of black and white photographs. Good condition. Small stain to front free endpaper along lower hinge (2mm or so); used-book store price in pencil upper front forecorner. Faint foxing outline visible on front endpaper verso. No other markings. Price-clipped dust jacket is also good, has a bit of edge-wear, small damp stain to lower front fore-corner. Profiles in Courage was the winner of a nonfiction Pulitzer Prize, a fact duly indicated on the dust jacket. There were three significant editions of Profiles in Courage printed: the first edition, written when Kennedy was still senator; this, the inaugural edition, to mark his ascendancy to the Presidency; and finally, the commemorative edition, marking his passing. However, it is now clear that Ted Sorenson, not John F. Kennedy, was the actual author of the book, though Kennedy presumably gave some direction to the project.
